How Adhesives Aid in Proper Die Cutting

An essential part of the converting process, die cutting enables labels to be cut into various shapes and designs. While it’s important to have the right type of die cutting equipment, a label adhesive also plays a critical role in the process.

Matrix Removal

In label construction, the die cut machine outlines the label shape, leaving unused parts of the label behind. This is called the matrix, which then gets stripped off the line and recycled.

To aid in efficient production processes, the matrix needs to be removed quickly and cleanly.

The right adhesive is key to ensuring proper matrix removal. For example, when hit with the die, the adhesive needs to break, so that the matrix can be removed. If it fails to do so, the line may need to shut down, hindering converters’ productivity.

Equipment Compatibility

In addition to enabling clean matrix removal, the adhesive needs to work well with various die cutting machine speeds. However, not all adhesives are formulated to handle the die cutting process.

Choosing an adhesive that does not offer approved compatibility with the equipment can result in increased maintenance costs and downtime.

Therefore, it’s important to work with an adhesive supplier that understands the die cutting process and how adhesives should perform. In particular, this includes the adhesive’s ability to break when hit with the die.

Substrate Differences

Labels can be manufactured using different types of substrates, such as film and paper. Additionally, they can come in unique thicknesses and contain various release liner coatings. Understanding the adhesive’s compatibility with these items is key to its die cutting success. This is especially important because failure to not fully adhere to these substrates can cause die cutting issues.

When choosing a label adhesive, it’s important to consider its level of die cuttability. Bostik understands converters’ needs and offers smart products designed for this process. For more information on how our company can aid in die cutting success, contact a Bostik expert today.
