The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has enacted a range of regulations on what materials can be used to ensure passenger safety and reduced environmental risk.

Primarily, these focus on fire retardancy. The FAA fire retardancy regulation that applies to compartment interiors is 14 CFR 25.853. It states that all materials used in manufacturing the following applications must possess fire retardancy:

• Decorative surfaces
• Interior ceiling and wall panels
• Partitions
• Galley structures
• Large cabinets and cabin stowage compartments
• Lavatories
