Strict regulations govern all materials used in aircraft interiors, including the types of adhesives. Let’s take a look at what some of these regulations are and how Bostik adhesives are able to meet them:
Passenger Safety Regulations
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has enacted a range of regulations on what materials can be used to ensure passenger safety and reduced environmental risk.
Primarily, these focus on fire retardancy. The FAA fire retardancy regulation that applies to compartment interiors is 14 CFR 25.853. It states that all materials used in manufacturing the following applications must possess fire retardancy:
- Decorative surfaces
- Interior ceiling and wall panels
- Partitions
- Galley structures
- Large cabinets and cabin stowage compartments
- Lavatories
Bostik offers smart aircraft interior adhesives that have fire retardancy incorporated directly into them for these applications. These adhesives inhibit the spread of flames and aid in occupant safety by reducing fire, smoke and toxic fumes.
Aircraft Weight and Balance Regulations
An aircraft’s weight and its balance are crucial to conducting a safe and efficient flight. The FAA’s FAA-H-8083-1A details the importance of maintaining proper weight and balance control.
This document governs which types of materials are used in manufacturing aircraft interiors in order to mitigate excessive weight, which reduces an aircraft’s fuel efficiency and safety margin if an emergency condition arises.
Bostik’s aircraft interior adhesives are lightweight and are specifically formulated to decreased weight yet provide strong, lasting bonds.
