HVAC Filters: Their Efficiency, Their Media and Their Smart Adhesives

In a recent blog, we discussed factors driving air filtration market growth. According to The News, this market spans a range of filter types including automotive, cleanroom, gas turbine and bag house air filters. Yet the type of filter that continues to dominate the air filtration market is HVAC. Let’s take a closer look at HVAC filters:

What are HVAC Filters?

HVAC filters are used in heating, ventilation and air condition (HVAC) systems. They increase the longevity and efficiency of the system by protecting it from dust and airborne particles. Additionally, HVAC filters improve air quality, making it possible to produce cleaner, purer air for building occupants.

As clean air regulations increase, demand for new or retrofitted commercial and residential HVAC systems has caused HVAC filter growth to rise.

Determining an HVAC Filter’s Efficiency

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers developed a standard that quantifies HVAC filter efficiency. This Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rates the filter’s ability to remove three different sizes of airborne particles on a scale of 0-16.

For most buildings, the standard HVAC filters are medium-efficiency (MERV 7-8) with large filter media. Large filter media are more cost effective because they have a lower pressure drop and greater contaminant-holding capacity.

Other factors to consider when determining how efficient an HVAC filter is include:

  • How humidity and moisture affect the filter
  • How the filter performs at application temperatures
  • How the filter performs in flammability tests

HVAC Filter Media 

The pleated air filters used in HVAC systems are manufactured using a range of filter media including:

  • Fiberglass
  • Polyester
  • Nonwoven

Adhesives for HVAC Filters

Adhesives are an important component in manufacturing an efficient HVAC filter. They are used in two applications:

  • HVAC filter frame assembly: End cap bonding, pleat separation, potting of media into frame, bonding media to cardboard/plastic housing
  • HVAC filter wire mesh/scrim attachment: Water-based, web or simple hot melt bonding rigid wire mesh to filter media to retain media shape

The types of adhesives for frame assembly are:

  • Water-based
  • Hot melt polyamides
  • Hot melt polyolefins
  • Hot melt polyurethanes

The types of adhesives for wire mesh/scrim attachment are:

  • Hot melt polyamides
  • Hot melt polyolefins

Each adhesive type offers various properties. Some adhesives have better property performance in certain areas, such as chemical resistance or bonding to difficult substrates, than others. To understand which type of adhesive works best for your needs, contact 800-7-BOSTIK.

  • M27510P08: This general purpose, polyolefin adhesive is used for pleat separation in the final media formation.
  • H287-337-JB: This general purpose EVA adhesive is a cost effective option for pleat separation applications, which require minimal strength.  No heat or chemical resistance is needed for HVAC filters.
  • L1231-SL and L1232-SL: This water-based adhesive is a low-solids, low cost polyvinyl acetate option with somewhat longer open time. This type of adhesive is  used for scrim, media bonding or wire mesh adherence to the media.
