While energy costs are significantly reduced once solar panels are installed, the cost of installation had initially been a challenge for homeowners, businesses and communities.
However, solar panel installation is becoming an increasingly cost effective option each year. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, reductions in technology prices, financing of solar installation and growing networks of solar installers have all helped drive down the cost for systems by 45% between 2010 and 2014.
Additionally, federal tax credits make solar panels an even more profitable option. Panels also require very little maintenance and can last up to 30 years.
Solar energy has proven to be a strong driver of economic development. According to The Solar Foundation, the solar industry had employed 208,859 workers as of late 2015. This is up 20.2% since 2014. Additionally, one out of every 83 jobs created in the U.S. since 2014 has been for the solar industry.
